The storm chaser in the tea tapes drama
The former policeman turned storm chaser and freelance cameraman at the
centre of the tea tapes drama would rather be in the middle of a cyclone.
Former Taranaki Daily News photographer Bradley Ambrose has been outed as the
freelance cameraman behind the controversial audio recording of John Key's
meeting with John Banks.
Key yesterday laid a complaint with police over the recording, which Ambrose
says was an innocent mistake in the middle of a chaotic media scrum.
The recording, of Key's conversation with ACT's candidate in the crucial
Epsom seat during their much-anticipated "cuppa tea", was obtained by the Herald
on Sunday which published an article, but did not reveal the detail of the
conversation.
Yesterday Ambrose, who worked for the Daily News in 2008 and 2009, said it
was simply an error. "But how could you expect a private conversation in a
staged media event?" he said.
"It all happened so fast and I couldn't get it out of my pouch.
"I couldn't get in and I just grabbed my mic in its pouch and threw it on the
table," Mr Ambrose said.
"That's all I had the space to do. Then I was ushered out, quite forcefully."
He said when he realised he didn't have his mic, he went back and tried to
retrieve it but was told by one of the Prime Minister's media staff she would
send it back after it had been sent to the police.
"I knew I had recorded something, but I didn't know what until I got back to
my office."
The mic had wirelessly sent the recording to Ambrose's camera, which recorded
the audio.
A former police officer himself, Ambrose has since become well-known as a
daring freelance photographer and cameraman, having travelled to Vanuatu to
shoot the Marum Volcano eruptions in 2010, and spent time chasing tornados in
the United States earlier this year.
"Being in the middle of a cyclone is much more fun than having this kind of
attention," he said. "It's just a storm in a teacup, a minor oversight that I
inadvertently left it there and it's snowballed."
Last night, he said he had still not heard from police about Key's complaint.
If there was ever proof that the right wing politicians and blogosphere cannot just admit when they or someone that they support have stuffed up, do the right thing, and move on - it is the attempts at character assassination that i have witnessed over the last few days in regards to Bradley Ambrose.
I would provide links to the blog posts, and all the comments that have been made about Mr Ambrose, by people that do not know him, have no idea what kind of person he is, and have no proof of the disgusting allegations that they have made towards him - but then i would be spreading the hideous lies and speculation as well - so i won't.
I guess though, if you want to believe John Key's supporters - being an ex policeman makes Bradley dodgy. I guess having two names (he is also known as Bradley White) makes him dodgy. To top it off, i guess at one time maybe having a scuffle with terminal anger management requiring Russel Crowe makes him dodgy. John Key himself, has stooped so low as to compare Bradley to the people who bugged the phone of a murdered British schoolgirl and is now attempting to use the New Zealand Police to bully Bradley.
According to the right wing if you are a man, there is never an excuse to be known by two names, that is not dodgy. If i believed that crap, then i would be most worried about telling my 20 year old son that he is dodgy. Billy, after all, is known by two names - the name on his birth certificate, and the name of his stepfather who raised him. Billy is not dodgy, or a criminal but if you believe the right wing blogosphere, he should be locked up and had the key thrown away already!
Having a scuffle with Russell Crowe makes a photographer dodgy? Seriously? That would make every photographer that has come within 100 feet of Crowe dodgy, as well as every waiter, bouncer, and a number of men that were unlucky enough to stand next to Crowe in a urinal!
You know what? Personally i don't care if the recording was made on purpose, or not. John Key and John Banks invited the media to their silly cup of tea to suit their own agendas, then they expected to be able to behave like a couple of zoo animals and be ogled at through glass while they have a private conversation? You have got to be kidding me. Anyone could have overheard that conversation and gone to the media with what they heard. They wanted a media circus when it suited them, then when they behave in a way that they are ashamed of - all of a sudden they want privacy?
GIVE ME A BREAK.
John Key and John Banks are treating this country like they think we are idiots. It is insulting.
Here is a quote from John Key in regards to the Covert Survelliance Bill - a bill which i support him on, and agree with.
From September 2nd;
'Security experts warned the automatic recording system was an invasion of privacy.
But a statement from the Government said the ITOC would enhance the government’s ability to protect the safety and security of New Zealanders through more effective border control, 24 hours a day.
Prime Minister John Key said today: “Anyone who is innocent has nothing to fear“.
That's right John Key. Anyone who is innocent has nothing to fear, and ANYONE includes YOU. Stop wasting Police time. Stop bullying. Stop attempting to deflect from your own appalling behaviour by attacking someone else.
Just release the stupid tape.
And to the right wing blogs and commenters - even those ones that i consider friends - who think it is ok to attack someone that they know nothing about personally, instead of just admitting that a politician and party that they support has majorly stuffed up - i am appalled by you.
Never say anything about anyone that you would not say if that person was sitting right next to you - advice that we should all heed, and that i would like to think any politician that deserves my vote would already live by.
And to the Bradley Ambroses out there - keep doing your thing! The New Zealand public rely on you to know the truth!
