I was introduced to Mark - briefly - back in 2008. It was a brief introduction because i took one look at him and promptly did a runner. I then hid at the back of the building that i was in at the time - until he was gone.
I was told then that he was once a very wealthy and high profile property developer but had lost everything due to his methamphetamine addiction and his affiliation with a gang. Apparently this gang - i did not ask which gang but obviously it was the headhunters - just used him and stole everything that he had not already smoked up a pipe.
He was barefoot, dirty and toothless when i met him. The fact that he is even still alive is amazing but to be described as a property developer is a bit of a stretch! How did he still own this building?
Apparently it is well known to be a haven of needle using prostitutes.
Scary stuff going on in Newton alright.

'Hotel California' property raided
A high-profile Auckland property developer was taken away by police who raided a central city apartment building this morning, says the man's son.
A swarm of armed and plainclothes officers descended on a Karaka St address - described by one resident as Auckland's 'Hotel California' - in Eden Terrace about 5.30am.
They executed search warrants as part of an ongoing investigation by the Auckland City child exploitation team.
The police systematically checked each of the 28 flats at the three-level Artizanz Apartments building and arrested two men and a teenage girl.
The building's owner, property developer Mark Lyon, was taken to the police station, said his son Blake Lyon.
He said his father had been taken away in handcuffs.
Blake was in his room when police busted through his door and searched his apartment, he said.
"I just heard them going bang on the doors. I came out with my hands up and got thrown on the ground.''
Several residents who lived on the top floor had been taken to the police station, he said.
He said police were searching for a "network'' of people.

Three of an estimated 10 residents of the building weren't taken to the police station, he said.
Police had raided the site several times before, he said.
The building was previously a warehouse, and had been converted into "party'' apartments by his father, he said.
"My dad bought this place just for a party house. Each room has different themes.''
Another resident Pamela Gardner said police were looking for underage girls and drugs in the search.
"There's no little girls [here], I know 100 per cent.''
Police said a 56-year-old man and 33-year-old man will appear in the Auckland District Court today on drug and fines-related charges.
A 16-year-old girl was also arrested for breach of bail conditions.
The Armed Offenders Squad assisted with the raid. No shots were fired although imitation firearms were recovered from the scene.
Police said six apartments in the complex were the focus of the search. Several items have been recovered and the investigation is ongoing.
Frank Squire, a friend of Mr Lyon, said he'd been invited to live in the building.
He described the apartment block as 'Hotel California', a real mixture of people from all walks of life.
He was speaking to a friend when police burst into his room, and was made to accompany officers as they searched the building.
There was always a "police presence'' around the building, but it had quietened down lately, he said.
Mr Squire said police left with his MacBook laptop but he was not arrested.
Three of the apartments were privately-owned, he said.

God where's the bucket, I'm going to puke! He reminds me of my ex, mind you I think my ex could probably out do him in the looks arena. I remember giving the police a description of him once and it went like this... well he looks like a cross between Charles Manson and Satan, he has some missing fingers, no teeth apart from a slither at the front, filthy amounts of sores, oh and he could be frothing at the mouth. OK now I feel sick again, better go find that bucket.

That Mark Lyons didn't look much like that photo when i met him. Add another 30 years, a lot more hair, swap the blood with sweat and add a bit of dirt and the photo would be closer to what i met - and that was back in 2008!

I heard at the time that it took a special kind of hardened working girl to handle him. Horrible to think he might have had teenagers at that property.
No actually after your description (no wonder you hid behind the building haha) they sound like twins but that’s what P does to everyone in the end, it’s so so sad. How can ones body put up with that amount of abuse?

Addiction to methamphetamine Sherril - that is how they get caught up with dirty old cretins like him in the first place.
None of those girls / women would have anything to do with him if he wasn't a drug source for them.
People do anything for it once they are addicted. They steal, lie, sell their bodies, kill...associating with a character like him becomes normal when he is feeding you all the drugs that you need.
Luckily for me, and thanks to the police - my rock bottom moment came before i thought it was normal to be hanging out in a place like that with someone like him and needle using junkies.
Only just though. Associating with Paulus Nieuwenhuiysen in order to get drugs was pretty darn close.
SIXTEEN though Jackie SIXTEEN, she’s just a baby, where’s her family, would you sit back and let your kids be in that situation? Or is she unfortunately a product of her environment.
I understand your entire last comment Jackie, that was my ex even down to selling/swaping his girly ass to get what he wanted. Had a quick google of Paulus, you must be thanking your lucky stars you got out before that life became normal! :)
You have to wonder where her parents are. I noticed late yesterday that she had been bailed to CYFS care. The problem there though is that they just run away. I suspect the problems start long before they are even 16.
My daughters are 15 and 17 and i struggle to sleep if my 17 year old is even at a party on a Friday night. She often stays the night at friend's places and they go to parties. She thinks i am nuts because i stay awake and wait for her text telling me that she is back safe at her friend's place and going to bed. My stress levels have increased with every friend of hers that gets their full license.
She always has to have her phone on her or else i panic. Maybe i am over protective but i guess the difference between me and other parents is that i know first hand exactly what is out there in Auckland City at night.
To imagine her mixed up with someone like Mark Lyon is the most horrifying thought that i can imagine and i don't understand how any parent would not do everything in their power to prevent that. I would be on the doorstep of that apartment building and i would not leave until i had her - if i was in those parent's shoes.
Re Paulus - i am lucky to be alive after my initial meeting with him. Months later our paths crossed again. He had the biggest bag of P i had ever laid my eyes on and by then i was ok to overlook the fact that he had drugged me to the point of having no memory of how i got from downtown Auckland to a mattress on the floor of a house in Papakura and was vommiting blood - if he was going to supply me with some of what was in that big bag.
Even at that low point though - it was never normal to me. I always knew how low i had sunk - which was probably my saving grace. The fact that i knew exactly what i was and how low i was is what nearly killed me - but in the end it saved me.
There was so much though - that was just normal back then - that i now look back on and think W.T.F!!!
Write a book, it sounds like it could equal the books T has been reading = money for study... Tell him 'I am Ozzy' by Ozzy Obourne is a great read, super super funny! Have a great day :)
