Making meth precursor prescription-only "best path" - Yahoo!Xtra News
American Politicians have been trying to do this for over a decade. They have been unsuccessful thanks to pharmaceutical companies placing more importance on their profits, than public safety, public mental and physical well being, and the environment.
The profits made from over the counter cold medicines are huge. They have fought it all the way to the Supreme Court in the States. As one pharmaceutical company executive put it...if you have a product and it is making you a lot of money...it does not matter if it is Dill Pickles or Pseudoephedrine...if someone tries to limit access to your product and restrict your profits, you will fight it.
They have fought it, with total disregard for the safety of the public. It will be interesting to see how this pans out in NZ. I am in two minds about it. I personally think that had NZ done this back in the 90s ...it may have been a good thing. I am not so sure now. So many people are addicted to this drug. People that you would never even think would have done it.
Every type of person from every walk can be an addict on this drug and you would never know it sometimes. I know a wealthy businessman, that owns a business in East Tamaki, who is married, and his wife is none the wiser. He would spend 2 k a week on it and she has no idea...and i know people like that woman that i took to hospital, who wander the streets at night getting beaten up and ripped off because they are so addicted to it that they can't or won't give it up no matter how hopeless their life has become.
I can't help but think that making it more difficult to get will only hurt those people that are already in such a terrible place. They will never stop. They will just get more desperate...what cost will that desperation have to the general public? This law will not change anything...it will just make it more expensive and create more profits for the people at the top of the P food chain, and create more crime and desperation for those at the bottom.
It's a catch 22 really. I can't help but think that John Key is closing the barn door after the horses are long gone. I could be wrong.
I don't think many people rely on going around from chemist to chemist buying cold medicine to make P anyway. Those people are too paranoid to supply ID, like is already required. Someone once told me that it takes something like 68 pills to make one gram. I could be wrong. Maybe it was 68 packets to make an ounce. I could be entirely wrong but it was 60 pills or packets or something like that to make either a gram or an ounce. My memory from that particular point in time is not the greatest. It was something astronomical anyway that seemed to me to be a bit too much like hard work.
This documentary explains in detail, the fight that American Politicians have had with the pharmaceutical companies, in the states. It is interesting.
